After defeat in their opening match, Ukraine redeemed themselves by beating North Macedonia 2-1 with first-half goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk, rendering Ezgjan Alioski’s second-half strike in vain. This was Andriy ‘Sheva’ Shevchenko’s beloved Ukraine’s second UEFA European Championship victory. The first came in 2012, when Shevchenko himself was on the pitch and scored a brace in a 2–1 win over Sweden.
